Reaction Formula

tert-Butyl Mercaptan Tube
TBM reacts with mercuric chloride to liberate
hydrogen chloride to discolor the indicator to pink.

Dimethyl Sulfide Tube
DMS reduces potassium permanganate
to discolor the reagent to pale yellow.
